Three Generations of Legal Practice

The Miller line of lawyers began with Sam Miller.
Sam Miller was born in Somerset West on February 8, 1914 and educated in Cape Town where he obtained his degrees. He was admitted to the Supreme Court, Cape Town, on his 21st birthday.
In 1939, Sam moved his practice to Johannesburg.
It was in Johannesburg that he made his name as an attorney.

Newspaper obituary Sam Miller quickly acquired the reputation of being one of South Africa's best criminal lawyers, and always advised his clients to plead not guilty no matter how hopeless the odds seemed.
He appeared for the defense in many celebrated criminal trials, and he was the man who secured an acquittal in the famous "Hillbrow explosion case".

Sam Miller had the policy of accepting articled clerks from all ethnic groups, notably Mr. Derrick Lawrence de Jager, the first Coloured person to be admitted as an attorney in the Transvaal.

Present and Future

Sam's legal legacy is continued today by his children and grandchildren over four continents. We will focus on his eldest son, Winston, born 1941.

Winston Earl Miller obtained his LLB at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in 1961. He also represented the university at various athletics events.
